After popping the cork, the first thing we do is ‘get our beak in’ ie, we take a good long sniff to see what amazing aromas our noses can detect. Then, of course, we sip away to see what else it gives us on the flavour front.
This July, we have ‘beaked’ and ‘sipped’- on your behalf, two different bottles. Here, we share our review of a sparkling from Germany – our Winterling Riesling.
On the beak front, if you wouldn’t mind closing your eyes to conjure up the following … citrus fruit (specifically lime) stone fruit (specifically peach) and petrol.
Yes, we did mean to use the ‘p’ word, because the Riesling grape has a wonderful propensity to throw off aromas of kerosene. It’s the chemical compound known as TDN (1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene!!) It is quite wonderful to behold and we think it will put a smile on your face (honestly!).
Add to that, the fresh and zesty lime peel and lusciously ripe peach and you will be bowled over.
You will be very pleased to know that sipping this lovely German sparkling does not involve kerosene/petrol. Phew.
As well as refreshing hints of sherbet and apricot, the three words that echoed around the tasting room were ‘lip smacking lime’.
All in all, a really refreshing and delicious sparkler – perfect on its own and wonderful with Asian cuisine.
PS – The ‘Winterling’ family, who specialize in making this style of sparkling wine, always pick their grapes by hand; they must be aged for at least nine months in bottle and their wine must be dry. All their still and sparkling wines are organic.
