When we taste, after popping the cork, the first thing we do is to ‘get our beak in’ ie take a good long sniff to see what amazing aromas our noses can detect.
This June, we have ‘beaked’ and ‘sipped’- on your behalf – from four different bottles. The first one is our Charmant Brut, Premier Cru Champagne which recently won a Silver Medal at the 2016 IWC (International Wine Challenge.)
And what a cracker this award winning champagne is. Using our eager beaks we picked up baked apple strudel, brioche and pink lady apples; if you ever wished your trip to the greengrocer transformed into a saunter in an apple laden orchard – this is it!
On sipping, we enjoyed the subtle flavours of those little rosy apple sweets you could buy from the sweet shop (not the sweets notes, just the savoury apple infused layers.) This is a really smooth champagne, which also contains hints of lemon tart and crème anglaise.
For the information thirsty drinkers out there – it’s interesting to note the reason this champagne is called ‘Premier Cru’ – this is related to grape quality levels. There are 319 villages in Champagne, of which 41 are deemed as Premier Cru and 17 as Grand Cru. You can spot this sort of detail on the champagne label.
